Malibu Sunset
Create a stunning Malibu Sunset cocktail with coconut rum, pineapple, and orange juice. Enjoy a taste of paradise in every sip!
I’ll admit it. This Malibu Sunset cocktail is one of my favorites to make (and sip!). There’s something about its vibrant layers of orange and red that remind me of the sunsets we get here in Florida.
The layers in this drink are not just pretty. They’re delicious too. Coconut rum adds the tropical vibes, while orange and pineapple juices balance out the sweetness.
And that splash of grenadine? It’s the cherry on top—or technically, the bottom! Either way, it brings just the right pop of sweetness to this rum mixed drink. It’s like a mini vacation in a glass.
Serve it with mahi mahi tacos, taco slaw, and fish taco sauce for all the tropical feels!

Flavor Variations
One thing I love about the Malibu Sunset is how versatile it is. Here are some fun ways to change it up:
- Switch Up the Alcohol: Don’t love rum? You can easily use vodka instead. Pineapple vodka is delicious in this drink!
- Add More Fruit Flavors: Cranberry, passionfruit, or mango juice give this cocktail a different flavor while still keeping it light.
- Go Big with Garnishes: Pineapple wedges, orange slices, and even a little drink umbrella add a fun, tropical feel.
How do you get the different layers?
The secret is in the grenadine. It’s denser than the other liquids since it has the most sugar. It sinks straight to the bottom of the glass. Pour it slowly, and you’ll have that perfect gradient every time.
Can I make this without grenadine?
Yes! Maraschino cherry juice works great as substitute. It’ll add a bit of sweetness and a pop of color.
How do I make it stronger?
Try adding a splash of pineapple rum or more coconut rum. Adjust it to your liking! You can even reduce the juice if that’s preferred.
What’s the difference between a Malibu Sunset and a Tequila Sunrise?
While both are vibrant, colorful cocktails, the main difference lies in the base alcohol:
- Malibu Sunset: Made with coconut rum, pineapple juice, orange juice, and grenadine. This tropical drink is typically garnished with a cherry and sometimes fresh fruit slices.
- Tequila Sunrise: Made with tequila, orange juice, and grenadine, without the addition of pineapple juice.
Each drink has its own distinct flavor. The Malibu Sunset is more sweet and tropical, while a Tequila Sunrise has a bold, citrus-flavor.
