Preheat the oven to 350°F. Grease a 9x9-inch square cake pan. Set aside.
In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until fluffy. Add the molasses, egg, and vanilla. Continue to mix until the ingredients are incorporated.
½ cup unsalted butter, ⅔ cup light brown sugar, 1 cup unsulphured molasses, 1 large egg, 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
Next, add the flour, cinnamon, ginger, ground cloves, baking soda, and salt. Mix until just combined. Then, carefully add the hot water, and mix just until to combined.
2 ½ cups all-purpose flour, 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon, 2 teaspoons ground ginger, 1 ½ teaspoons baking soda, 1 teaspoon ground cloves, ½ teaspoon salt, 1 cup hot water
Transfer the batter to the prepared cake pan.
Bake for 40-45 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. The center should spring back when you touch it
Allow the cake to cool completely before adding whipped cream or frosting.
